DLCO Diffusion Study

DLCO, or diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide, is a pulmonary function test that measures the efficiency of gas transfer across the alveolar-capillary membrane. It provides valuable information about the lung's ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. During the DLCO diffusion study, the patient inhales a small amount of carbon monoxide, which rapidly diffuses into the bloodstream. By analyzing the rate at which carbon monoxide is absorbed, the test can assess the functioning of the alveoli, capillary network, and hemoglobin. Abnormal DLCO values may indicate various lung conditions, such as emphysema, interstitial lung disease, or pulmonary embolism. The test is an essential tool in diagnosing and monitoring respiratory disorders.
