Pleural tapping (thoracocentesis) is a procedure done in patients having pleural effusion or build-up of fluid outside the lung, inside the chest cavity (pleural space). A sample of fluid is removed from the pleural space and subjected for microbiological and biochemical investigations to establish the cause of fluid accumulation.
